The Best You Can Get

Myrtle Beach

Located along the ocean between Surfside Beach and North Myrtle Beach, the City of Myrtle Beach is at the heart of the Grand Strand. A lively culture of fun permeates the environment here, making Myrtle Beach both a sought-after place to call home, as well as a desirable vacation destination.

Myrtle Beach began as a humble seaside town with scant paved roads and very little traffic. Over the years, the area continued to grow until it became incorporated in 1957. The city acquired its name after the preponderance of Wax Myrtle shrubs that grow here.

The beautiful sandy beaches and mild-tempered, gentle waters stretch uninterrupted along the city’s coastline, offering beach-goers a chance to swim, boogie-board, and sunbathe, while the more adventurous pursue jet skiing, parasailing, and hang-gliding. The area around Springmaid Pier is a popular spot for dining, while the pier itself is a destination for fishermen, bicyclists, and pedestrians taking in the sea breeze.

Close by is the Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum, a beautifully appointed building located along the ocean, which has a mixture of revolving art exhibits as well as permanent galleries showcasing local Southern artists. The Boardwalk affords beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean; but for a panoramic view 200 feet up, take a ride on the popular Myrtle Beach SkyWheel. To add even more height to your vista, Sky Tours offers helicopter rides of the surrounding area from $20.

Myrtle Beach is renowned as a golfer’s paradise. It features over 100 courses, many designed by legends of the game. In addition, the city offers a multitude of fun activities for the entire family to enjoy, like miniature golf, water parks, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Myrtle Beach Speedway, the Hollywood Wax Museum, and WonderWorks, the interactive science museum. Watch the Myrtle Beach Pelicans play a baseball game, or camp, bike, or picnic at the ocean-front pristine wilderness preserve, Myrtle Beach State Park.

Just around the corner is the up-and-coming downtown area, the Market Common, a walking neighborhood filled with a variety of shops, dining, and entertainment. Broadway at the Beach is another popular shopping destination within the city; here you can enjoy famous brand-name retailers and a medley of bars and restaurants.

At night, there are comedy clubs, dance venues, and themed dinner shows featuring pirates and medieval knights. Catch a show at the Carolina Opry, the area’s premier performing arts theater.
